At the 2016 Game Developers Conference, Sony announced that their new Playstation VR headset will finally be available for purchase this coming October. The headset will replace the viewers’ vision with a digital world, and it can also pick up head movements via internal sensors. Additionally, users will be able to play regular PS4 games on a virtual big screen tv displayed inside the headset.
Although Playstation VR will be release several months after competing products such as the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, Sony still believes they will sell well due to a market leading $400 price point. Sony has already sold 36 million PS4s since its release, so they will likely rely on their existing PS4 consumer base to boost Playstation VR sales. Sony and third party developers are hard at work developing content the new headset, and the company expects nearly 50 titles to be available by the end of the year.
Once VR takes hold within the gaming industry, the next big step could be augmented reality.
"Today's devices are capable of very cool things. They can be used in various fields, for instance education," said Yoni Nevo, the chief executive of Cimagine, which creates augmented reality products for the retail industry. "If you are studying anatomy, then you can look at the book and the image turns into 3D, and you can manipulate it."
