Memory is an essential element of computers, allowing such systems to process, store, and otherwise work with data and information. One of the most common forms of computer memory is Random Access Memory (RAM), a type of hardware that is used to temporarily store data during operations. RAM is essential for the basic functionality of a computer system, and it plays a critical role in determining overall performance and speed.
When discussing RAM, it is important to understand that it is a form of volatile memory that only retains information that the computer is currently using. What this means is RAM will not be able to maintain data when power is lost, therefore it does not serve the same role as a hard drive, solid-state drive, or other form of storage drive. Instead, RAM focuses on offering rapid access to data that the computer needs to retrieve.
Generally, RAM is used to store data and programs that are currently in use by the computer’s processor or central processing unit (CPU). When a computer is turned on, the operating system will first be loaded from a storage device onto RAM. This process is known as booting, and upon completion, the operating system and all other programs will be stored on RAM so that the processor can access data and execute instructions with ease.
Compared to a hard disk drive or solid-state drive, RAM is significantly faster, capable of accessing information nearly instantaneously. For this to be possible, RAM relies on electronic circuits to store data, rather than using a series of mechanical and electronic processes to store and share data. If RAM was not present in a computer, the processor would have to directly communicate with a storage device to handle data, causing overall performance to drop.
