Will H. Brady founded W.H. Brady Co. in 1914 in Wisconsin selling promotional calendars and display signs. From humble beginnings, Brady Corporation has grown to become a publically-traded manufacturer of comprehensive identification solutions. Currently headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Brady Corporation garnered approximately USD$1.15 billion in net sales for fiscal year 2013 and maintains a workforce of about 7,400 strong. The company’s primary business segments are currently comprised of two groupings: identification solutions (IDS) which made up 63.7% of sales (in FY2013) and workplace safety products (WPS) which made up 36.3% of sales (in FY2013).
IDS is the company’s core brand with 75% of the portfolio manufactured and distributed under the Brady name. The IDS product portfolio includes facility identification (safety signs, pipe markers, labeling systems, spill control products), product identification (materials and printing systems, brand protection labeling, work in process labeling, finished product identification), people identification (name tags, badges, lanyards, access control software), patient identification (wristbands and labels for hospital settings), and custom wristbands.
WPS is a result of a number of acquisitions the company has made since 1967. The WPS product portfolio includes: safety and facility products, first aid supplies, industrial and office equipment, and absorbents and spill containment products. In the past ten years alone, Brady has acquired nearly 40 companies worldwide, expanding both its market offerings and global distribution channels. Acquisitions include Electromark, Accidental Health & Safety (of Australia), Sécurimed (of France), Stickolor (of Brazil), Welco (of the U.K.), and SPC.
Some notable examples of the use of Brady products includes: helmet logos for the NFL, markers for piping at the Manhattan Project’s weapons site, and Brady absorbent products (oil booms, nets, absorbent pads, etc.) used in the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. In addition, Brady Corporation has accumulated numerous accolades by various business publication. In 2010, the company was named to InformationWeek 500’s list of the country’s top IT organizations. In 2008 and 2006, the company was hailed by Forbes as one of America’s Best Big Companies on the Platinum 400 list. In 2007, the company was named Corporate Strategic Acquirer of the Year by M&A Advisor.
