Network switches are pieces of hardware that enable computer networking, and they are intended to accept physical connectors from computers and other devices on a network. The data it receives from such devices is then forwarded using packet switching.
A switch port is defined as the physical opening where a data cable can be plugged in on a network switch. Switch ports have three rectangular sides with a V-shaped point on the top or bottom. By connecting numerous devices to the ports on the switch, the devices are able to interact with each other via data transfer with the switch.
It is worth noting that most networking devices also connect to the internet, so that they can acquire internet access through the switch ports. The number of ports on a switch differs based on the device’s function. For instance, a home router may be equipped with five ports while a switch for a large network may have up to 52 ports.
The number of devices that can connect to an Ethernet switch is usually one less than the number of physical ports as one port is often reserved for the cable that connects the switch to the router. Generally, network switches are frequently used to create and manage VLANs. In this type of network, there are three types of switch ports: access, trunk, and hybrid.
Different Types of Switch Ports
Each port type has a unique function, and a standard Ethernet interface can work in the place of any of these ports.
Common Types of Network Switches
A switch determines which devices should receive data and forwards the data packets to only the necessary ports. There are several types of network switches, all of which vary in capability, benefit, and price.
1.Unmanaged Switch
An unmanaged switch can connect Ethernet devices to each other in a network and their ports easily accept Ethernet cables from a wide range of devices. In addition, it is designed with plug-and-play functionality and works well with basic networks that do not need customization. Unmanaged switches can automatically change between half-duplex and full-duplex operation as necessary. Furthermore, it can utilize half-duplex mode for efficiency and can switch to full-duplex mode.
2. Managed Switch
As the name suggests, managed switches require hands-on oversight from a network administrator but offer more user control and customization options than their counterparts. Additionally, they can be used to create VLANs and can serve as aggregators in very complex networks. While they are more expensive, they offer remote access to administrators and support for Gigabit Ethernet.
3.KVM Switch
Keyboard, video, and mouse (KVM) switches reduce the amount of cables required to operate more than one computer or server; thus, they enable a user to control different computers or servers with just one keyboard, monitor, and mouse.
4.Smart Switch
Also known as an intelligent switch, a smart switch is a type of managed switch with limited options. You can either configure the duplex modes or use it to produce a small and simple VLAN.
5.PoE Switch
A Power over Ethernet (PoE) switch distributes power along with data to connected devices. As an added benefit, it can do this without being plugged into an electrical outlet. Many people use these switches to install smart home devices like lights and security cameras.
