From personal computers to smartphones, there are many important parts that come together to provide the functionality that many of us heavily rely on nowadays. Though computers and mobile phones may seem somewhat different, their internal peripherals are often very similar. In this blog, we will provide a short overview of the integral types of computer hardware components that are most common.
Motherboard: The motherboard of a computer is the main circuit board that allows for computer components such as the CPU, RAM, storage, and more to communicate with each other and create functionality for the computer. These boards provide connecting ports for various components to be attached, and allow for expansion of the computer. Often, the power supply for the computer will be connected to the motherboard which then distributes power to the rest of the hardware.
Computer Processor: The central processing unit, or CPU, serves as the brain of the computer that interprets code for execution of processes and has control over all of the computer’s operations. Through the use of fetching, decoding, and execution, the CPU can translate instructions from a program and perform a calculation. As the CPU does not have enough registers to store all needed data beyond what it is currently working on, CPUs rely heavily on RAM.
Primary Storage: Random Access Memory, or RAM, serves as the solution for program data that CPUs operate with. RAM can access, read, and write data in any particular order and is often much faster than other types of data storage. Data that is stored on the RAM is temporary, however, and all is lost once the computer is turned off. Most modern types of RAM utilize dynamic random access memory RAM which refreshes the memory constantly to be used and read more quickly.
Secondary Storage: Secondary storage for computers comes in the form of internal and external hard drives, depending on whether the drive is inside or outside of the computer case. Hard drives can store data of a computer as a more permanent solution as data that is stored is kept even when the machine is powered off. Another form of secondary storage are flash drives which can be connected to computers with a USB port, as well as are the storage format for smartphones and tablets.
