What are the Types of Computer Hardware Components?
When building or repairing a computer, one can easily notice that there are many parts that come together to provide all of its functionalities. For someone unfamiliar with each component, it may seem a daunting task to troubleshoot, replace, or upgrade parts. Understanding the basics of various important computer hardware components can help you better understand your computer.
Computer Hardware Parts and Their Functions
-
The CPU, or Central Processing Unit, can be thought of as the “brain” of the computer. Data is inputted into the CPU and after it is processed, the unit then sends signals to various system components to actuate a specific command. The speed and power of a CPU dictates how efficient it processes data and functions as a whole. The motherboard of a computer is the main circuit board in which all components are installed, allowing the CPU to communicate with other components to create interconnection and inter functionality. Motherboards may feature a number of slots for different components to be installed into. The board must also be powered to function, as is the same with many other components.

In regards to memory, the standard types are storage devices and RAM. Storage devices such as hard drives and solid state drives are a means of storing information permanently for the computer to use. The speed and the type of disk drive installed will affect how quickly information is read and written, further affecting the speed of the computer. Operating systems are also installed onto a main storage device for system operation. RAM, or Random Access Memory, is the short term memory of your computer which programs are loaded onto during use. This type of memory is also lost whenever the computer is shut off. The speed of RAM far outmatches that of current high-end disk drives, making them optimal for application processing.

Graphics cards are another important component that allows for computers to render graphics and images at great speeds and high amounts of detail. The more powerful the graphics card, the quicker and more efficient these processes are, serving well for intensive applications such as video games and editing. Network cards are another type of card component that can be installed internally or externally, allowing computers to have internet connectability.
Lastly, there are many peripherals that can be connected to the computer to achieve other functionalities. Keyboards and mouse allow for the controlling computer processes, while monitors display them for you to see. Printers, scanners, speakers, and other peripherals only increase the amount of functions that one can achieve with their computer system.
