Samsung’s watches are taking a new shape, as they recently revealed their new watch will be the first one to be round.
Previous installments of Samsung smartwatches have been of the square or rectangular variety, so this traditional look is new territory for the South Korean multinational conglomerate company.
The watch will run Tizen, which is Samsung Corporation’s own open source software. The Gear smartwatch will not run Android Wear, because they have been pushing hard the last few years for development on its proprietary platform. They have already been able to secure partnerships with big name third-party app maker such as Yelp and CNN.
It will run the new interface on a 1.65 inch circular display with a “rotating bezel” metal frame used to navigate the interface and a metal crown. The small screen has a sharp resolution of 360 x 360 pixels, with a density of 305 pixels-per-inch. It comes with a 2G data connection, and can be connected to Bluetooth devices which can be used to make calls.
Some other features of the watch include a built-in motion sensor, gyro sensor, heart-rate monitor, pressure sensor, and magnetic sensor, as well as Wi-Fi, GPS, and independent cellular radio. The exact size of the watch casing has not been specified yet, but it is probably safe to assume it will be around the same size as its competitors.
Users who are familiar to the Apple Watch will have no problem adapting to Samsung’s device. The rotating bezel is used to scroll through lists, zoom in and out of photos, adjust the volume, select items arranged in a circle, input numbers, and perform mostly any function the watch is designed to do. Anyone who is old enough to remember how to use the iPod scroll wheel will find the watch to be a very similar design. This style differs from the Android watch, which is controlled with a touch screen display and single button - a style more comparable to most phones you see today.
Samsung has not yet publicly announced the new watch, but the rumors have come out about it and it won’t be long until it all comes full circle.
