This Friday, Samsung will release its new “Gear VR” headset in what will be the first large scale consumer test for virtual reality. Retailing for a mere $100.00, the Oculus powered headset will offer consumers an imperfect but effective example of VR technology. The headset functionality is unique in that it is more of a Samsung Galaxy attachment as opposed to a stand-alone product. Users will attach their Samsung Galaxy devices to the headset, and then the Gear VR will use the power of the device to run games and apps.
Facebook (The parent company of Oculus) and Samsung have even enlisted the help of several tech industry giants to help give consumers more incentives to purchase the Gear VR. Companies like Netflix and VRSE have created apps specifically for the Gear VR, and a number of video game companies have already developed VR games for the moderately priced headset.
Although the Gear VR only offers a glimpse into the future of commercially available Video Glasses technology, it is none-the-less an important milestone in gauging the market for virtual reality eyewear. If this initial release is a success, than this paves the way for the Oculus Rift among other VR options releasing next year.
“People talk about VR and think it’s isolating,”
Max Cohen, vice president of mobile at Oculus, told me about VR in social contexts.
“But you can travel to places you don’t have the means to go to. Photos and videos are social. At Oculus we talk about experiencing anything, anywhere with anyone.”
The Gear VR has been met with a few critiques including its inability to as a smart phone add-on and occasionally choppy video quality, but overall it is an excellent first foray into the capabilities of commercially available VR tech. Look for the gear VR online and in stores this holiday season.
