Microsoft-Surface-Book-300x225

Microsoft’s never-ending battle with Apple added a new chapter this week, as the company announced the arrival of the Surface Book.

Surface Book is a laptop made to be in direct competition with Apple’s MacBook. The device has three different configurations, each providing a unique way to work. The first is, expectedly, as a normal laptop with a well-lit screen. It can also be used as a portable clipboard once the display portion is detached. In this sense, it essentially works as a tablet. Finally, it can be used as a canvas, by flipping the monitor around 180 degrees and closing it on top of the keyboard. Plenty of creative possibilities arise once it is put into pen first mode.

The most amazing fact about this unveiling is that this is the first laptop Microsoft has ever created. After decades and decades of Microsoft computers, we can finally have one that fits on our lap. The device itself is essentially a Surface Pro 4 with a more polished look, but it’s better late than never to be able to get your hands on the Microsoft laptop.

The Surface Book is priced around $1,500. It was built with power and speed in mind, using a 6th Gen Intel® Core™ i5 or i7 processor with up to 16GB of memory and an optional discrete graphics chip.

Specifications of the base model include:

  • SCREEN: 3000×2000 13.5" (267 PPI)
  • OS: Windows 10 Pro
  • CPU: Intel 6th generation Core i5
  • RAM: 8GB
  • GPU: Intel HD Graphics 520
  • SSD: 128GB
  • SIZE: 12.30×9.14×0.51-0.90" (312×232×13-23 mm)
  • WEIGHT: 3.34 lb (1.515 kg)

So no matter what you use Microsoft’s new device for, they can now say they are in the game for laptop sales and will continue to feud with Apple till the end of time.

Intels-Curie-CPU-300x225

Intel Corporation, the American multinational technology company based in Santa Clara, California, initially revealed their new chip module in January 2015 at the International CES. This new chip module, which is being referred to as Curie, is about a centimeter across and features a 32-bit microcontroller, a small amount of Flash and RAM, Bluetooth Low Energy for connectivity, as well as a six-axis sensor with an accelerometer and a gyrometer. This chip was designed and built in order to be utilized in wearable devices such as a smart bracelet or a smart pendant. Realistically, this chip can be used in a wide variety of small gadgets that do not require a lot of local processing power, like in a small remote-controlled car.

Early next year, Intel’s small Curie chip will be available to the public in the form of an Arduino development board. In the United States, Arduino’s Curie board will be sold as Arduino 101. Overseas, Arduino’s Curie board will be sold as Genuino 101. They will both be available starting the first quarter of next year, and will be sold for $30, or around 27 euros. The board, while is not really compact enough to build a wearable gadget, will be ideal for building prototypes and will allow its users to get familiar with Curie’s capabilities.

This product was made primarily for the maker community, which has been utilizing Arduino boards in order to build a wide range of products. The Arduino board was also aimed towards the classroom, where students can get involved and interested in electronics and programming.

If you compare it to other entry-level boards at that price point, the big thing it brings is connectivity,

said Jay Melican, who is known as the “maker czar” at Intel.

Young folks who are building things are used to interacting with robots and cars through their cell phone, and this lets them do that.

AMD-300x225

With Star Wars Battlefront being released on Friday, AMD is coming out with a Catalyst 15.9 beta driver to fix the memory bug. The memory bug itself was very problematic because the memory leak caused some PCs to allocate all of their available memory when one would resize an active browser window. This got to a point where Chrome and Firefox increased their memory footprint very quickly when the hardware acceleration is turned on.

In order to fix this bug, affected users are asked to roll back their drivers to 15.7.1 which will speed up this fixing process.

According to the AMD website, the Catalyst will enhance the following games: “Battlefield: Hardline Evolve, Far Cry® 4, Lords of the Fallen, Project CARS, Total War: Attila, Alien: Isolation™, Assassin', Creed® Unity, Civilization®: Beyond Earth™, FIFA 2015, GRID Autosport, Ryse: Son of Rome, Talos Principle, The Crew, Grand Theft Auto V, Dying Light, The Witcher® 3: Wild Hunt.”

Not only this, but the AMD website states that the following issues are resolved: “Second Life - Avatar rendering is corrupted when hardware skinning is enabled, Star Trek Online - Block corruption is observed if MSAA is enabled, a black screen is observed when setting up a 3x1 SLS with 3 HDMI monitors, Leadwerks : A crash is observed with a "Pure Virtual Call" error message, system black hangs/BSOD upon resuming from S3/S4 sleep on AMD Radeon™ R9 285 configured in AMD CrossFire™ mode, with AMD CrossFire™ enabled, Timeout Detection Recovery (TDR) occurs during actual gameplay when YouTube Mix moves to the next song in Firefox®, screen tearing on enabling VSync with Alien: Isolation game, AMD Catalyst™ Control Center Video Quality settings may not be available or retained if the "Enforce Smooth Video Playback" option is not selected on some AMD Radeon™ HD Series graphics adapters, a black screen may be experienced when attempting to enable Eyefinity after changing the display mode (Portrait, Landscape), primary display may not be retained after disabling AMD CrossFire™ while in AMD Eyefinity mode, enabling or disabling AMD CrossFire™ may lead to one side of the 4K MST display being shown as black, and or stuttering may be seen in Dragon Age Inquisition on Single and Multi GPU configurations.”

Xerox

Xerox has taken a page out of Mission Impossible’s book by creating a self-destructing chip that can protect top secret data.

The chip will function just like any other computer chip that stores encryption or other data. The only difference is it comes with the ability to blow itself up, adding an extra measure of security (and because blowing things up is fun). This way, if any crucial data or info gets into the wrong hands, the chip can be destroyed within seconds.

The way it self-destructs is by having a built-in resistor heat up to an extreme temperature. Ten seconds later, the glass shatters into a million pieces and the data is lost forever. The explosion process can be triggered with the use of a simple laser, or it can be remotely detonated with a radio signal.

The applications we are interested in are data security and things like that,
said Gregory Whiting, a senior scientist at PARC in Palo Alto, California.
We take the glass and we ion-exchange temper it to build in stress. What you get is glass that, because it’s heavily stressed, breaks it fragments into tiny little pieces. We really wanted to come up with a system that was very rapid and compatible with commercial electronics.

And what better way to demonstrate how great your product is than by creating a display where you blow it up? It’s about as close as you can get to running a fireworks stand in the digital world. A demo was recently conducted in St. Louis where the destruction was caused by a photo-diode, showing just how effective it is.

The chip is made from Corning’s Gorilla Glass, which is the material manufacturers of smartphones and tablets use to protect their screens. It was developed in tandem with DARPA and its vanishing programmable resources project, which aims at improving data security.

epson

Epson Corporation is developing a new printer known as EcoTank that nixes the need for ink cartridges.

With many of their customers getting frustrated with constantly having to replace their ink cartridge, Epson has radically transformed their business model by introducing a printer that rarely needs to be changed. The new cartridges will have a yield that can print at least 4,000 documents, and have the capability to be refilled with easy to use ink bottles.

Officials at Epson were keen on reducing the stress of their customers, and just making things more convenient in general.

“It’s a really big advantage to the end user,” said John Lang, Epson’s chief executive officer for North America. “That anxiety and that fear of running out of ink-it’s amazing to me that that was so prevalent.”

The business model they used before is known as the “razor and blades” model, which takes its name from the shaving goods. The strategy is to get people to buy a product that seems cheap on the surface, but constantly needs replacing of a certain, more expensive part. People were so mad about always having to change the cartridge that Epson had to deal with a number of class action lawsuits. In 2006, they awarded customers a $45 credit per printer due to all the troubles.

The cheapest of the new printers will cost around $379, much more than the $60 for the model that needed constant replacing. Customers will find it much more beneficial because it will be more razor, less blades.

qualcomm

Qualcomm Inc. has announced that the company is expected to follow through with a strategic review that could result in the division of the company, among other options. The company has been under pressure from hedge fund Jana Partners to break off its chip business from its very profitable patent licensing business. In addition, Qualcomm Inc. may announce that it is considering other options such as giving back more cash to shareholders when the company’s third quarter results are released this Wednesday.

However, it is only a possibility that this will be Qualcomm’s official decision as the company's plans are in flux. This news comes after Qualcomm announced that it is preparing to lay off several thousand employees. More than 10 percent of its 30,000 person workforce will be laid off and the company is planning to officially announce the job cuts once its quarterly results are released.

As Chinese, European and South Korean regulators investigate Qualcomm for antitrust violations, it makes sense for the company to organize a break up. This will help avoid additional investigations and conciliate its investors. There is also the possibility for shareholder returns given the current desire for merging in the chip industry.

Qualcomm has recently been struggling with a 46 percent drop in second quarter profit in April. Major competition from Taiwan's MediaTek Inc. and a handful of small Chinese companies are threatening Qualcomm with their specialization in making chips for low-priced phones. The company forecasts third quarter revenue and profit below analysts' expectations in April, stating the occurrence due to the loss of a major customer along with delays in product launches by some smartphone makers will hurt sales of its flagship Snapdragon chips.

apple-pay

The electronics giant Apple has launched their new contactless payment system in the UK. The system, called Apple Pay, allows consumers to use their iPhones to tap and pay in shops that are supporting the launch. Apple Pay allows for iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, and Apple Watch owners to pay for items that cost up to 20 Euros by tapping the device to a payment terminal, similar to a credit card. The launch in the UK is the very first expansion of the Apple Pay system outside of the United States, where it started last October. The UK is already experienced with the popular use of contact tap to pay card systems, making Apple Pay less of a stranger for consumers to use. With the system, Apple hopes the technology will reduce the amount of items consumers need to carry along and provide increased security of payment.

Apply Pay is essentially a digital wallet that allows consumers to use their credit and debit payment cards through Apple’s Passbook app. The system can be used in a physical high street store as well as online. Apple Pay uses near field communications (NFC) technology that is found in the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, and Apple watch, similar to contactless cards.

However, Apple Pay provides more security than contactless cards as the system provides an extra safety & security measure called tokenization. This security feature ensures that any card information stored on a phone are never received by the retailer, rather the payee gets a single use “token” allowing them to debit the payment only once. In addition, the payments are secured and verified by the fingerprints of the gadget owner via Apple’s Touch ID system. Although this may serve as a slower authentication compared to contactless card, the safety measure serves as an extra layer of protection for security conscious consumers.

Sony And Nintendo PlayStation

A very unlikely partnership occurred in the early ‘90s that many may not know about. More than 20 years ago, Nintendo and Sony decided to partner up to face the immense competition from companies such as Sega with its Genesis console. There had been rumors of Sega planning for a CD-ROM add-on to the Genesis console. Sony had already developed a significant piece for the Super Nintendo’s internals, which then sparked the two electronics giants to work together on a video game accessory that would add a CD capability system to the famous Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The “Nintendo PlayStation” would have been a Sony system sold separately, while allowing the Super Nintendo Entertainment System to play SNES cartridge games along with SNES CDs.

Presently, it is known that Nintendo and PlayStation are now completely separate entities. It is said that the original deal between Nintendo and Sony broke off due to a partnership that the former announced with Philips, a Sony competitor, for the optical add-on. Approximately 200 prototype units of the Nintendo PlayStation were produced and destroyed.

The current President of Sony Computer Entertainment’s Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, joined Sony in 1986 which was five years before the division unveiled, and subsequently canned, the SNES-CD add-on system. In a recent interview at the E3 - Electronic Entertainment Expo, Shuhei Yoshida acknowledged the existence of the Nintendo PlayStation hybrid console, stating "When I joined Ken Kutaragi's team [in 1993], there was a system called 'Play Station' that had both Super Nintendo cartridge support and some disc game support. Actually, I played some games [on it] as well."  After Nintendo announced their partnership with Philips, Ken Kutaragi began to internally lobby the company to fund plans to build a console without Nintendo's support. The result of this is what came to be the PlayStation that we know today.

Samsung

A Chinese consumer protection group has filed lawsuits against the tech giant Samsung and the Chinese manufacturer Oppo for their use of bloatware on their smartphone products. The Shanghai Consumer Council’s argument is that the two companies pre-install an overly excessive amount of additional and unnecessary apps on their devices before selling them to consumers. In addition, the council believes the bloatware apps to be too difficult to be removed. The lawsuits were initiated after a significant amount of user complaints. Users of these smartphones are frustrated with the less than expected amount of storage space due to the bloatware apps already taking up a great amount of data space. Another issue occurs when over time, apps and bandwidth become larger which causes the user to continually upgrade providing a monetary advantage to the phone maker.

Depending on the outcome, the Shanghai Consumer Commission's case against Samsung could set the precedent that manufacturers are allowed to install whatever they want on consumer electronics, so long as the eventual buyer knows about it. It could also create a situation where the consumers have a lot more say over what is pre-programmed into the phone before they buy it.

On one of Samsung’s flagship devices, the Galaxy Note 3, the council found 44 pre-installed bloatware apps, while on the Oppo Find 7a, there were 71 apps found. The Shanghai Consumer Council hopes that the lawsuits will deter other companies from following Samsung‘s and Oppo’s practices and eventually require manufacturers to inform consumers regarding pre-installed bloatware.

Bloatware is not an uncommon occurrence in smartphone products. Many phones, especially in the carrier variants, are available with already pre-loaded apps that the majority of phone users never open. However, other electronic products, not just phones, also have unwanted software. Smartphone are not the only products that run into this issue as computer brands, such as Lenovo, have shipped PCs pre-installed with the Superfish adware.
