On October 10th 2016, there was an article posted by Jef Cozza on CIO Today which talks a about how Avaya is rolling out a new cloud networking platform. It is said that this cloud network is focused on simplifying and accelerating the deployment and management networks. This was announced last week during the IP Expo in London. This platform includes a new type of network lifecycle management solution for both midsize business clients and enterprises.

Avaya mentioned that this new network will be more scalable and secure as well as unified since this is a cloud based network.

Here is what was a statement about the cloud networking that was released by the company.

Jean Turgeon, the chief technologist at Avaya Networking has much to say about the future of the cloud networking.

iPhone 7

Apple has a problem on its hand. Apple used Samsung and TSMC to build its SoCs but has chosen to adopt an Intel modem for all of its AT&T and T-Mobile variants of the iPhone 7. Factory-unlocked devices for Sprint and Verizon all use Qualcomm’s modem silicon. According to data gathered By Cellular Insights, both of the devices perform at a comparable level when there is a strong signal present but the device with the Intel modem tails off significantly as the signal weakens.

LTE signal strength ranges from ~-75dBm when measured directly on top of a cellular base site to -120dBm at the edge of coverage as measured by RSRP. The data shows us that the Intel modem cannot sustain the same amount of output as its Qualcomm counterpart especially at the -105dBm threshold. Even more concerning is that at -115dBm the Qualcomm modem is sustaining roughly twice the network throughput on the same signal strength as the device carrying the Intel modem.

Users can hold on to hope that Apple will come out with a software update that will improve the Intel modem’s performance but for now the factory-unlocked version of your iPhone is your best bet for LTE performance in an area with marginal LTE coverage. Intel won the iPhone 7 sweepstakes but that was predicated on the assumption that the Intel and Qualcomm modems would offer equal performance. As of right now it looks like Apple made a mistake in switching over to Intel in regards to the modem.

University of California Riverside

Researchers and professionals at the University of California Riverside along with the State University of New York have teamed up and have discovered that there has been a fault in many computer hardware systems. The dilemma has been founded in the computers central processing system unit (CPU) that can release full access to one’s computer to hackers that attempt to break into a computer.

This fall through was located in the address Space layout randomization (ASLR) defense mechanism. Per tests that were ran by the researching team, they found that through the ASLR was an easy access to where they would be able to disable and get through and allow them to steal any information from the computer that was available.

Zotac Company

On October 26th 2016, Gareth Halfacree wrote an article on Bit Tech talking about how Zotac has its 10 year anniversary and how it will be released a new product range.

The new products include things such as graphic cards, miniature PC, backpack machine, and solid state drive. They also have a virtual reality headset called the VR Go which can be combined with the use of the HTC Vive or Oculus Rift without tethering to the base unit. The new VR Go uses a GeForce GTX 1070 graphic card which is normally linked to a Windows 10 PC.

There is another product called the Sonix 10 Year Anniversary Special Edition SSD that will be launched. Here is what Halfacree has to say about the description. “The final product to be launched under the anniversary banner is the Sonix 10 Year Anniversary Special Edition SSD, a PCI Express solid-state drive supporting the Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) standard. Boasting sequential read and write performance of 2,800MB/s and 1,500MB/s respectively, the drive comes with a custom 10th anniversary metal shroud with LED lighting triggered during drive activity.”

LTC Power and Energy Monitor

David Manners wrote an article for Electronics Weekly talking about how Linear Tech has a new power and energy monitor. This Monitor is for 0V to 15C DC supply rails.

The LTC2947 has a sense resistor that integrates a 300µO temperature. By doing this, the LTC2947 provides users with a 24mm2 which can allow for a 1.2% accurate energy reading. Here is what else Manners says about the monitors.

“When measuring a full-scale current of 30A, the voltage drop over the LTC2947’s integrated sense resistor is only about 9mV, causing power dissipation of approximately a quarter watt or about 10mW when measuring a 6A rail.

In addition to low power dissipation, the LTC2947 offers high dynamic range due to its low offset of only 6mA (or 1.8µV).

Three integrated ?? ADCs and an internal or external precision time base (crystal or clock) enable accurate measurement of multiple parameters, including current, voltage, power, charge, energy, temperature and time.”

There is an I2C or SPI interface where minimum and maximum values are able to be read through the digital reading. Whenever the measurements exceed the warning threshold, there is an alert that goes off. This alert lets eliminating burdensome polling.

Mediatek  X20 Development Board

Mediatek has just released its X20 Development Board which features a 10-core chip and 4k graphics and could be used as an Android PC. Intel Updates to Lights and Lasers

On August 17 2016, Agam Shah wrote an article for PC World discussing about how Intel is switching out its use for copper cables and implementing lights and lasers in order to speed up data transfers. This is due to the fact that copper cables are becoming more dated as technology progresses.

Here I s what Jason Waxman, the corporate vice president and general manager of Intel’s Data Center solutions group has to say about the new update.

Fiber optic cables are a better option than denser copper cabling in data centers. Depending on the workload and implementation of servers, fiber optics can also be cheaper than copper cabling. In addition to an ability to stretch across kilometers, the fiber optic cables will take up less space than older cables.

In order to use the lights and lasers, the Intel uses silicon photonics. The silicon photonics will be implemented in stages. In the beginning the photonics will work in optical communications between data centers and servers.

As time goes on, Intel will also implement these optical communications at a chip level which is used to drive communications inside computers.

PCs and servers today use older electrical wiring for data transfers. But the data transfer speeds via those cables had reached a brick wall, and fiber optics provide a way to shuffle data at faster speeds.

macOS Sierra Operating System

 Apple is coming back with a new operating system this fall and calling it macOS Sierra. There are several updates to this operating system and they are being viewed by Apple WWDC 2016. This is a great time for apple because they have had the current operating system for years now. There is a trend with apple products now to have names such as watch OS, iOS, or tvOS so the fact that their operating system is still named or called OS X is kind of out of trend. Obviously this new operating system is being launched with a new name just like the releases of the current operating system with OS X had a new name. However, this year the operating system itself is going to have a whole new name.

Just like any other software updates, this new operating system update comes with a new features. As Apple Inc. is mass selling their products from the iphone, to the iwatch and the macOS; their new operating system is going to have more equability between all the OS. One of the most difficult feature that Apple deals with to keep their devices connected smoothly and Apple’s continuity feature is the most difficult to keep running smoothly because it requires software as well as hardware. This is very exciting because it keeps the Apple customers and fans excited for the all their new comings.

Sony in Gaming Industry

Sony, the Japanese multinational conglomerate corporation reported Friday that their revenue was down to 10.8 percent with a reported profit decrease of 74.3 percent year-on-year. An unexpected increase in gaming revenue has helped counter the shrinking business in smartphones with the impact of the Kumamoto region earthquakes impacting the production of the camera sensors that Sony supplies to various smartphone vendors such as Apple. The increase of revenue for its game and network services grew to 14.5 percent largely in part due to the significant increase in the PS4 software sales through the PlayStation Network.  PS4 games consoles sales rose from 3 million to 3.5 million compared to the same quarter in the previous year.

With the games and network services unit becoming the largest segment of Sony’s business revenue the company has understandably devoted more resources to further invent in it by launching Sony’s new PlayStation VR virtual reality system which is scheduled for launch in October of this year. In contrast, the company has begun pulling out of all of its non-core businesses with the most recent plug being pulled, the sale of almost its entire battery business to Murata.

Sony has also reduced sales of all their mid-range smartphones as well as pulled the reins on sales in what is deemed unprofitable geographical areas while focus more on the high-value-added models. As a direct result of the actions taken and the changing market, Sony’s smartphone business has dropped from 7.2 million to 3.1 million compared to the same quarter in the previous year. This is an astronomical reduction of nearly 33.7 percent year-on-year. Furthermore, the semiconductor side has also a considerable hit due to the image sensor production experiencing a mammoth impact from the Kumamoto earthquakes.

Sony is now revising its forecast for its fiscal year with revenue expected to drop by 8.7 percent. Sony also has forecasted lower revenue from smartphone sales for the year with only 19 million sold as oppose to 24.9 million the previous year versus the 20 million PS4 consoles sold this year compared to 17.7 million consoles sold last year.
