University of California Riverside

Researchers and professionals at the University of California Riverside along with the State University of New York have teamed up and have discovered that there has been a fault in many computer hardware systems. The dilemma has been founded in the computers central processing system unit (CPU) that can release full access to one’s computer to hackers that attempt to break into a computer.

This fall through was located in the address Space layout randomization (ASLR) defense mechanism. The ASLR is primarily made for the security that blocks from a computer from being attacked from computer software’s.  In accordance to inform the public it was released at the IEEE/ACM International Symposium on Microarchitecture which happens to be one the largest computer structure and architecture conference that is held in the world. The ASLR works in various ways such as,” Through randomizing where data is stored in a computer’s memory, ASLR serves to protect systems from common cyber-attacks like “buffer overflow,” where a program writing data to a “buffer,” or temporary storage, overruns the boundary and overwrites memory locations.  “

Per tests that were ran by the researching team, they found that through the ASLR was an easy access to where they would be able to disable and get through and allow them to steal any information from the computer that was available.

During an interview with one of the first-year electrical engineering students he stated that the issue itself was a,” fundamental exploit in the hardware itself, you can’t really patch that up with any software since it’s built into the hardware.” Although it is not the easiest task to hack into a computer because it does require lots of codes and requires for various to be installed in accordance with their codes it is still possible and should be taken seriously.

Zotac Company

On October 26th 2016, Gareth Halfacree wrote an article on Bit Tech talking about how Zotac has its 10 year anniversary and how it will be released a new product range.

The new products include things such as graphic cards, miniature PC, backpack machine, and solid state drive. They also have a virtual reality headset called the VR Go which can be combined with the use of the HTC Vive or Oculus Rift without tethering to the base unit. The new VR Go uses a GeForce GTX 1070 graphic card which is normally linked to a Windows 10 PC.

There is another product called the Sonix 10 Year Anniversary Special Edition SSD that will be launched. Here is what Halfacree has to say about the description. “The final product to be launched under the anniversary banner is the Sonix 10 Year Anniversary Special Edition SSD, a PCI Express solid-state drive supporting the Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) standard. Boasting sequential read and write performance of 2,800MB/s and 1,500MB/s respectively, the drive comes with a custom 10th anniversary metal shroud with LED lighting triggered during drive activity.”

Generic Brand Ink Cartridges

HP has decided to become exclusive when it comes to ink, because HP is concerned with their innovative nature and intellectual designs at which they want to become an exclusive product in the market. There has always been some type of conflict or stress when it comes to third party cartridge manufacturers and printer companies because these third party cartridge manufacturers have to follow the designs and specs of the printer companies. This conflict started in early September when HP has designed new printers to reject ink cartridges from any other source than HP, and the way they are doing that is by adding authentication chips to the Ink cartridge that tells the printer this is an HP Cartridge or not. HP Printers have always been on the competitive edge when it comes to their electronics and they always have their own unique touch and now they are becoming more exclusive when it comes to ink by adding an authentication chip to their cartridges.

However, when it comes to electronics manufacturers always have ways to go around any restrictions and it’s not the first time that a company tries to encrypt their products with a certain code so that other companies can’t profit from their production. Printer companies make their profit mainly from their ink products, what they do is they place their printers for a cheap price and sell their ink cartridges for a high cost. This is why Printer companies have always tried to find ways to make generic cartridges read false warning while being used in a printer such as low-ink or cartridge is empty way before the cartridge is actually empty. Some printer will not let you print black and white unless there is a generic color ink cartridge installed. This doesn’t happen with the original ink cartridges.

LTC Power and Energy Monitor

David Manners wrote an article for Electronics Weekly talking about how Linear Tech has a new power and energy monitor. This Monitor is for 0V to 15C DC supply rails.

The LTC2947 has a sense resistor that integrates a 300µO temperature. By doing this, the LTC2947 provides users with a 24mm2 which can allow for a 1.2% accurate energy reading. Here is what else Manners says about the monitors.

“When measuring a full-scale current of 30A, the voltage drop over the LTC2947’s integrated sense resistor is only about 9mV, causing power dissipation of approximately a quarter watt or about 10mW when measuring a 6A rail.

In addition to low power dissipation, the LTC2947 offers high dynamic range due to its low offset of only 6mA (or 1.8µV).

Three integrated ?? ADCs and an internal or external precision time base (crystal or clock) enable accurate measurement of multiple parameters, including current, voltage, power, charge, energy, temperature and time.”

There is an I2C or SPI interface where minimum and maximum values are able to be read through the digital reading. Whenever the measurements exceed the warning threshold, there is an alert that goes off. This alert lets eliminating burdensome polling.

The LTC2947 is offered in a 32 lead 4mm x 6mm QFN package. These start at 1,000 piece at $5.95 each.

Intel Updates to Lights and Lasers

On August 17 2016, Agam Shah wrote an article for PC World discussing about how Intel is switching out its use for copper cables and implementing lights and lasers in order to speed up data transfers. This is due to the fact that copper cables are becoming more dated as technology progresses.

Here I s what Jason Waxman, the corporate vice president and general manager of Intel’s Data Center solutions group has to say about the new update.

Fiber optic cables are a better option than denser copper cabling in data centers. Depending on the workload and implementation of servers, fiber optics can also be cheaper than copper cabling. In addition to an ability to stretch across kilometers, the fiber optic cables will take up less space than older cables.

In order to use the lights and lasers, the Intel uses silicon photonics. The silicon photonics will be implemented in stages. In the beginning the photonics will work in optical communications between data centers and servers.

As time goes on, Intel will also implement these optical communications at a chip level which is used to drive communications inside computers.

Here is what Bryant, the executive vice president and general manager of Intel’s Data Center Group has to say about this.

PCs and servers today use older electrical wiring for data transfers. But the data transfer speeds via those cables had reached a brick wall, and fiber optics provide a way to shuffle data at faster speeds.

macOS Sierra Operating System

Apple is coming back with a new operating system this fall and calling it macOS Sierra. There are several updates to this operating system and they are being viewed by Apple WWDC 2016. This is a great time for apple because they have had the current operating system for years now. There is a trend with apple products now to have names such as watch OS, iOS, or tvOS so the fact that their operating system is still named or called OS X is kind of out of trend. Obviously this new operating system is being launched with a new name just like the releases of the current operating system with OS X had a new name. However, this year the operating system itself is going to have a whole new name.

Just like any other software updates, this new operating system update comes with a new features. As Apple Inc. is mass selling their products from the iphone, to the iwatch and the macOS; their new operating system is going to have more equability between all the OS. One of the most difficult feature that Apple deals with to keep their devices connected smoothly and Apple’s continuity feature is the most difficult to keep running smoothly because it requires software as well as hardware. This is very exciting because it keeps the Apple customers and fans excited for the all their new comings.

For those who are concerned about their Apple computers and if they are compatible with the new software, unfortunately not all mac versions are compatible and there is a list of computers that can clearly show which computers are compatible and which computers are not. From what has been shown for the most part is that any Mac that has been designed by 2010 or later seems to be compatible, anything prior to 2010 the software will not be supported by the hardware.

At www.justithardware.com a website created by ASAP Semiconductor deals with competitive distributer of computer hardware including Apple's computer hardware parts. Customers can expect to find purchasing solutions and low prices for any computer hardware parts they are looking for. Sony in Gaming Industry

Sony, the Japanese multinational conglomerate corporation reported Friday that their revenue was down to 10.8 percent with a reported profit decrease of 74.3 percent year-on-year. An unexpected increase in gaming revenue has helped counter the shrinking business in smartphones with the impact of the Kumamoto region earthquakes impacting the production of the camera sensors that Sony supplies to various smartphone vendors such as Apple. The increase of revenue for its game and network services grew to 14.5 percent largely in part due to the significant increase in the PS4 software sales through the PlayStation Network.  PS4 games consoles sales rose from 3 million to 3.5 million compared to the same quarter in the previous year.

With the games and network services unit becoming the largest segment of Sony’s business revenue the company has understandably devoted more resources to further invent in it by launching Sony’s new PlayStation VR virtual reality system which is scheduled for launch in October of this year. In contrast, the company has begun pulling out of all of its non-core businesses with the most recent plug being pulled, the sale of almost its entire battery business to Murata.

Sony has also reduced sales of all their mid-range smartphones as well as pulled the reins on sales in what is deemed unprofitable geographical areas while focus more on the high-value-added models. As a direct result of the actions taken and the changing market, Sony’s smartphone business has dropped from 7.2 million to 3.1 million compared to the same quarter in the previous year. This is an astronomical reduction of nearly 33.7 percent year-on-year. Furthermore, the semiconductor side has also a considerable hit due to the image sensor production experiencing a mammoth impact from the Kumamoto earthquakes.

Sony is now revising its forecast for its fiscal year with revenue expected to drop by 8.7 percent. Sony also has forecasted lower revenue from smartphone sales for the year with only 19 million sold as oppose to 24.9 million the previous year versus the 20 million PS4 consoles sold this year compared to 17.7 million consoles sold last year.

Intel Tango Smartphone

On July 28th 2016, Agam Shah wrote an article for Computer World talking about how Intel is quietly closing down the Project Tango smartphone and refocusing their ideas towards augmented reality. During Intel’s Developer Forum in San Francisco last year, most of the audience was attracted towards the Real-sense 3D camera which used drones and robots to “see” the world around them.

The phone hit the market in January of 2016 which is priced at $399.00. This new phone allowed for developers to build augmented reality applications with the implementation of Real-sense.

However, the smartphone didn’t create enough hype to generate sales. The phone started slowly disappearing from the market. It seems as in the Real-sense is alive however, Intel might be taking an alternative route and looking to use augmented reality and virtual reality in different forms.

Here’s what Shah has to say about Intel’s next move.

Intel will lay out its current VR and AR strategy at this year's Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco next month. While it's scaled back its development of Atom chips, it will describe plans for a pair of augmented-reality smart glasses for remote collaboration, based on another low-power chip-set.

Intel's best assets for VR and AR today are the powerful PC processors needed to drive headsets like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. Intel doesn't provide the graphics to drive those headsets, however, which come from Nvidia and AMD.

Intel a semiconductor company that is headquartered in Santa Clara, California. It was founded in July 18th 1968.

Microsoft IBM

Microsoft is partnering up with IBM in to push Surface devices to enterprises. Microsoft whose Surface devices quarterly revenue total more than $1 billion USD, hopes to further increase that figure by putting said devices on more corporate desktop. Microsoft has sought out IBM who is one of the world’s largest software makers specifically in order to write the applications for the Surface devices with the explicit goal of tailoring the Surface devices to meet the everyday needs of consumer goods, financial and retail organizations. Microsoft wants to make Surface devices more appealing to enterprises with the IDC forecasting that enterprise PC upgrades will pick up more in the second of the year. Microsoft is hoping that by preemptively tailoring their Surface devices with software that caters to enterprises they will be able to increase their stranglehold on the Surface device market share.

Surface tablets are already incredibly prevalent in organizations such as the National Football League and Emirates airlines but has had more success with professional buyers and consumers than enterprises. IBM has been involved in similar deals in the past most notably one with Apple in 2014 in which IBM developed apps for the iPads and iPhones. For IBM this is a win/win as they will undoubtedly acquire more enterprise software customers yet they won’t have to worry about issues with supporting the hardware.

Microsoft believes that their unique Surface features will be able to fully utilize and take advantage of the IBM custom software with the applications revolving primarily around management, reporting, forecasting, employee productivity and analytics. Microsoft has also reached a similar partnership with Booz-Allen Hamilton in order to work on Surface tablets for the public sectors, health and government organizations. Although Microsoft sells pre-configured Surface tablets presently it would not divulge on whether or not it would customize the Surface hardware to meet the needs of enterprises. Currently Microsoft sells a Surface Book and Surface Pro 4 tablet as well as the Surface Hub which is a PC inside a large-screen display. With the Surface line being announced as a Service program, the Surface devices can be packaged with cloud services on a paid subscription basis. This will save customers from paying for the hard-ware upfront and will allow users to upgrade hardware faster.

Here at Just IT Hardware, we have a dedicated and expansive array of IT board level components products. We are your one-stop shop and go destination for a simplified sourcing solution.
