intel-Smallest-PC
Intel’s Compute Stick is set to make its debut soon, as it is now available for pre-order through a number of online retailers. Intel describes their new product as a PC-on-a-stick device. If you have a mouse and keyboard handy, Intel’s Compute Stick can transform any device with an HDMI port into a desktop to run an operating system of your choice. The device is meant to be an alternative to a standard laptop or PC. It’s being marketed to people who are often on the go and need to set up shop at any moment and use a computer. The Compute Stick comes with an Intel Atom quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. The Microsoft model comes equipped with Windows 8.1. The other option is Linux, which comes with Ubuntu 14.04. Online stores such as Newegg are already letting people order the device. The Microsoft version goes for $150, and the Linux version is priced at $110. Initial reports indicated that the latter was supposed to go for around $90, but nothing so far has shown the product at that low of a price.

The dongle (a mall device that plugs into a computer and serves as an adapter) is about four inches long – only a little bigger than your standard USB drive – and is power-efficient enough to compare to the quad-core Intel Atom processor. It has built-in wireless connectivity, on-board storage, a full-sized USB port, Bluetooth 4.0, and a micro SD card slot to allow for extra memory. The Compute Stick gives users the same quality and performance they would expect from a standard PC—the only difference is that this PC can fit in a pocket. According to reports, the device will be available in the first week of May 2015. ASUS-Chromebook-Flip-2

In March of 2015, Google debuted a set of new product lines with Chrome operating system technology, bringing the number of offerings with built-in Chrome OS to over 20 devices. The newly introduced devices include two laptops, with hardware manufactured by Hisense and Haier (China-based electronics OEMs), which are both priced at $150 USD (the cheapest Chromebook offering thus far). Also released was the Asus Chromebook Flip, a convertible laptop and tablet device developed by Asus. The Chromebook Flip is lightweight at just under two pounds and costs $250 USD.

The most noteworthy release however is the new Google Chromebit. Developed in collaboration with Asus, the Chromebit is just slightly larger than a typical USB thumb drive but has the ability to turn any LCD display or television into a personal computer with the ability to access internet, send and receive emails, and run word processing software. Available in summer, the Chromebit will be priced at less than $100 USD. The Chromebit is not the first entry into portable operating system devices. Intel has begun shipping its Intel Compute Stick which would enable displays to run Microsoft Windows operating systems. Also similar and already brought to market is the Wyse Cloud Connect, developed by Dell.

Google also announced in the same press conference that Android Apps will soon be available on Chromebooks, starting with the newly released Hisense and Haier models. The move marks Google’s first step towards integration of the company’s two operating systems – Android and Chrome OS.

sandisk-logo

On March 26, 2015, SanDisk Corporation announced that the company expects its quarterly revenue to total $1.3 billion USD, a decline from its initial expectation of $1.4-$1.45 billion. As a result, the company’s stock tumbled by 13.4% from premarket trading.

Based in Milpitas, California, SanDisk Corporation specializes in computer storage and memory products distributor. Founded in 1988, the company grew enormously to become a publically traded company with market capitalization in excess of $17 billion USD in February of 2015. After the company’s recent announcement, however, SanDisk’s market value now stands at $14.3 billion USD. However, Forbes suggests that the mass exodus of investors has caused the stock to become oversold, or has an unbalanced value to its true worth. The Relative Strength Index (RSI), a technical analysis indicator measuring fear and panic in a stock trading, identifies an oversold stock as one with an RSI below 30 and which may then be worth buying. SanDisk measured an RSI of 27.5 after announcing its dismal revenue expectations.

The company cited product qualification delays, lower sales of enterprise products, and lower pricing as reasons for declining revenues. Investors are worried since the company’s enterprise products (such as their Solid State Drives [SSDs] and software for larger-scale commercial or industrial network requirements) are some of the company’s central offerings. The company detailed the following risks in their press release: excess/mismatched captive memory output, capacity or inventory may lower selling prices; embedded products and SSDs are experiencing lower demand, ventures into 15-nanometer process technology, X3 NAND memory architecture, 3D NAND technology may be delayed or underperforming, among other detrimental factors.

Just the day before on March 25, SanDisk issued a press release announcing the successful completion of a 48 layer second generation 3D NAND, also called BiCS2. Developed in collaboration with Toshiba, the 3D NAND is a charge trap flash semiconductor memory technology which uses silicon nitride film to store electrons instead of conventional doped polycrystalline silicon. Toshiba uses vertical flash bit strings which increases the number of bits which can fit on the silicon. The new 3D NAND will be put into initial production later in 2015, with commercial production starting in 2016.

logitech-mx-master-mouse

Announced in March of 2015, Swiss maker of computer accessories Logitech International S.A. released a new re-vamped update of its popular MX Master wireless mouse. The new mouse will be configurable with up to three devices at once, using Bluetooth or the company’s proprietary Unifying Receiver and an “Easy-Switch” button to connect between three desktops, laptops, tablets, or any mix of the three. Priced at $99.99 USD, the mouse can be used on both Windows and Mac operating systems. The company states that the mouse can last for up to 40 days on a single charge and is equipped with a re-chargeable battery which can be recharged in only four minutes for a full day’s worth of use.

The speed-adaptive scroll wheel of the MX Master is derived from the company’s prior MX Revolution, which debuted in 2006, marking the first return of the popular feature since the MX Revolution. One distinction on the new model is the inability of the scroll wheel to tilt side-to-side. However, the MX Master is able to switch between ratchet mode (for slower, precision scrolling) and free spin mode (for faster scrolling through large pages).

The mouse will also utilize the company’s laser and advanced optic tracking technology known as Dark field Laser Tracking. Using LED lights and an angularly repositioned sensor, the tracker can process more surface contrast and capture greater specular reflection, allowing the mouse to track even on a surface such as glass. Other upgrades on the MX Master includes a thumbwheel for horizontal scrolling, programmable buttons, and a redesigned palm rest. In addition, the mouse’s island keys are rated at 10 million clicks, double the previous models’ rating of 5 million clicks. The Gesture button is configurable to switch between various Mac functions.

The MX Master will be available in stores this coming April.

apple

In March of 2015, Apple Inc. has reportedly acquired FoundationDB, a software company specializing in NoSQL and SQL database access. Although neither company responded to requests for comments, FoundationDB announced on its forum that they will no longer be offering downloads and have decided “to evolve our company mission.” The reason for the acquisition is not known but commenters surmise that the purchase will be used to “bolster Apple’s server-side technologies for the App Store, iTunes Connect or iTunes in the Cloud” (TechCrunch), “finding a future FileMaker application or tool” (Patently Apple), or other data-heavy applications such as “online dating, gaming, analytics, and online marketplaces” (ZDNet).

The value of the purchase has not been released, but Apple retains a cash reservoir of $178 billion USD for acquisition of start-ups and other endeavors. The company has acquired 17 companies in 2014 alone, including popular headphone manufacturer Beats Electronics LLC.

According to TechCrunch, FoundationDB offers high speeds and strong scalability, handling ACID-compliant transactions and transferring 14.4 million random writes per second with ease. This could prove useful for Apple with its increasing software data requirements resulting from its ventures into cloud computing, smartphone messaging, and other high-data applications.

FoundationDB is based in Vienna, Virginia with a workforce of approximately 40 strong. The company was cofounded by Michael Arrington, one of the founders of technology blog TechCrunch – the outlet which first broke the news about the acquisition. The small company has been growing consistently since 2009, raising almost $23 million in two rounds of venture capital funding from SV Angel, Sutter Hill and CrunchFund.

Bang & Olufsen
For a long time, HP had partnered with Beats for the audio technology in their PCs and all-in-ones. But when Apple acquired beats for $3 billion USD last year, the partnership failed. Now HP is partnering with Bang & Olufsen, developers of high-end audio gear, to deliver quality sound for their devices. The brand doesn’t carry the same following from fans as Beats, the company that notably instilled in consumers a desire for expensive headphones. It is hard to say if the Beats logo on HP devices helped sales, but whatever leverage that partnership had on consumers has been lost. HP expects the new partnership with B&O to be a positive one. With the increase of streaming video and the popularity of music PC audio quality has become increasingly important. B&O has been developing audio technology since 1925. Their products have been used in TVs, cars, headphones and speakers. Another leading PC maker, Asus, even produced a new audio-focused computer in 2010 with the help of Bang & Olufsen. Clearer tunes will be delivered by new HP devices by isolating audio circuitry and reducing the amount of metal used in the headphone jack.

Additional details are limited but there is speculation that B&O will also provide high-quality amps for HP devices similar to the agreement HP previously had with Beats. HP will put the Bang & Olufsen brand on their top of the line Spectre, Omen, and Envy devices. Bang & Olufsen’s sister company B&O Play will be available on Pavilion PCs and tablets. The new B&O branded PCs will appear this spring. However HP is allowed to continue developing products with new Beats technology through the end of last year. Devices with the Beats logo will likely to continue to sell through 2015. It is estimated that about 15 to 20 percent of devices sold by HP still include Beats technology. Apple TV Hardware
Revealed by an anonymous source speaking to BuzzFeed, Apple Inc. is working on a hardware update for its Apple TV, which hasn’t been upgraded since 2012. The update will reportedly include a boosted processor with a custom A8 (which can support ultra-high definition video of up to 4K-resolution), as well as increased memory storage beyond the current capacity of 8 GB.In addition, the company will release the upgraded Apple TV with a new App Store and software development kit, including Siri voice control and integration with HomeKit home automation devices. The source also claims that Apple is currently in talks with a number of television networks (including ABC, CBS, Fox, among others) to provide streaming services for network programming. The company intends to offer a new service in the Fall with about 25 channels, available by subscription on the Apple TV. The new Apple TV is expected to be announced at this year’s World Wide Developers Conference taking place this summer around June.

Analysts at J.P. Morgan believe that a new Apple TV equipped with a greater processor and an app store could give the company a possible entrance into the $35 billion USD gaming software market, competing with the likes of Sony’s PlayStation and Microsoft’s Xbox consoles. These new developments mark the newfound interest that the company is taking in the potential of the Apple TV, which has long been ignored in favor of smartphone, smartwatch, and personal computer technology. With the last major upgrade approximately three years ago, the company has recently announced a $30 discount for the current version of the Apple TV – from $99 per unit to $69 per unit. The new focus on the Apple TV is a result of the high sales volume that the product has experienced, reaching over $1 billion USD in 2013. samsung-yesco electronics

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. of the Korea-based conglomerate Samsung Group announced in March of 2015 that it will acquire the LED sign and display manufacturer YESCO Electronics, LLC. YESCO Electronics specializes in LED (light emitting diodes) modules and large-scale commercial electric signage. The purchase comes after Samsung has been experiencing less-than-stellar sales in the smartphones sector. As a result, the conglomerate decided to strengthen its activity in business to business (B2B) ventures, particularly in the realm of digital display. Samsung Electronics’ have long been a global leader in large format displays based on LCD (liquid crystal display) panels, but the company sees the greatest opportunity in LED technology.

While Samsung Electronics has been the world’s largest (by revenue) information technology corporation since 2009, the company has been rapidly acquiring a diverse range of technological start-ups and established companies to fuel innovation. YESCO Electronics is the eighth company that Samsung Electronics has bought since May of 2014. Samsung’s acquisitions have been spread broadly across industries and include healthcare and medical devices, government and education, hospitality, and retail. Recent purchases include SmartThings (a startup which develops home automation products) and Quietside LLC (an air-conditioner manufacturer) – both acquired in August of 2014.

Based in Utah and established in 1988, YESCO Electronics is a subsidiary of the Young Electric Sign Company. YESCO Electronics’ parent company was first founded in 1920 and is currently privately owned. Some notable examples of YESCO’s projects include: the multi-story advertising display screens in Piccadilly Circus in London, the NBC Experience globe in New York City, the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, and the “Vegas Vic” cowboy sign in Fremont Street in Las Vegas. The electronic signs business, which accounted for approximately 20% of the Young Electric Sign Company’s overall business, will now operate under the Samsung Electronics name.

Avago-Acquires-Emulex
At the end of February 2015, Avago Technologies agreed to acquire Emulex. Avago is a Singapore-based chip designer that notably supplies radio-frequency chips for Apple iPhones. Emulex is a California-based computer network provider. Purchasing Emulex’s connectivity business will strengthen Avago’s portfolio and allow them to better serve the enterprise storage market. In an all cash deal, Avago will pay USD$609 million to acquire Emulex. After the announcement, Avago ended the trading session at a new lifetime high of $129.25 a share and Emulex grew by 24 percent to $7.93 a share. Avago expects that after completion of the transaction, the company will see immediate boosts in their earnings per share. Avago Technologies has shown strong growth over the past year. First quarter earnings are an impressive USD$351 million compared to last year’s USD$134 million. As a major supplier to Apple, Inc., they may be partially responsible for this growth. Apple is now the most valuable company in the world with a market capitalization of USD$758 billion, more than Exxon Mobil Corp. and Microsoft Corp. combined. It is interesting to note that two board members of Emulex are also on the board of directors at Juniper Networks. Because the board of directors have taken meetings with Elliot Management, people have begun speculating that a deal for Juniper may be in the works. On March 4th, Juniper CFO Robyn Denholm will be speaking at the Morgan Stanley Tech, Media and Telecom Conference in San Francisco. We will have to wait to see if any news breaks then. harris

Defense suppliers Harris Corporation and Exelis Inc. have merged in a deal that is valued at USD$4.75 billion.

The two joined together last Friday, according to a press release, when the boards of both companies approved the deal that morning.

Both Exelis and Harris are big suppliers of the United States military—both firms having competed for the Soldier Radio Waveform and Rifleman Radio contracts.

William M. Brown, chairman, president and CEO of Harris was delighted over the deal.

"Acquiring Exelis is transformational for Harris. The combination of the two companies' highly complementary core franchises creates a competitively stronger company with significantly greater scale. We are expanding in a market, where we have decades of success and a workforce dedicated to providing our customers with innovative and cost-effective solutions for some of their most complex challenges."

According to the terms of the deal, Exelis shareholders will receive $16.625 in cash and 0.1025 of a share of Harris common stock, based on Harris' closing price as of Feb. 5, 2015, for each share of Exelis common stock. Upon closing, Harris shareholders will own approximately 85% of the combined company, and Exelis shareholders will own approximately 15%.

The economic impact has already been noticeable – Harris stock has jumped to $78.30 per share, more than a twelve percent increase.

Exelis was more than happy to sign the agreement, as David F. Melcher – CEO and president of Exelis – stated, "This agreement to become part of Harris Corporation represents an exciting new chapter for Exelis. Combining the companies not only creates shareholder value, but the commitment to excellence and innovation that both companies share will significantly benefit customers and provide new opportunities for employees."

With their powers combined, the firm is now valued as an USD$8 billion tech company with 23,000 employees, which includes 9,000 engineers and scientists.
