Nokia has released a price and availability date for their new Ozo camera, designed for recording 3D movies and games that can be seen through a virtual-reality headset. Nokia has been itching to get back into the game of being a technological leader ever since they stepped away from producing cell phones.
Nokia President Ramzi Haidamus felt this was the best opportunity to make that leap, as he was impressed by the capabilities of the camera from the very beginning. Virtual reality presentations are primed to take off in the near future – car dealerships such as Volvo are experimenting with the idea of virtual showrooms for their products.
Ozo can record stereoscopic 3D video and spatial audio through eight synchronized shutters and integrated microphone accesories. The camera can operate wirelessly and is able to record video with all the data stored into a single file. It can also be used for live streams and broadcasts. Ozo’s design incorporates a removable digital cartridge at the back, which supports around 45 minutes of footage. It also houses the rechargeable battery pack.
"We're at the dawn of an exciting new medium that will transform the way people connect to stories, events, and the world around them. OZO is a powerful tool designed for the professional creators who will answer the most exciting and intriguing questions about the possibilities for virtual reality," Haidamus said in a statement.
Technical specifications of Ozo include a sensor of eight 2k x 2k sensor parts, each with a 195° field of view, yielding a full 360° x 180° video coverage area and recording at 30 fps. It can be mounted on standard video camera tripod kit and is battery-powered for wireless operation.
Samsung and Google are also looking to create similar cameras. Samsung with the Bulbcam and Google with the Odyssey (backed by GoPro).
