In a recent shakeup affecting the executive level, Microsoft Corporation announced that it would be combining its Devices and Windows business units into one under the guidance of Windows chief and Executive Vice President Terry Myerson. This move forces former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, who was head of the Devices segment, out. The new unit will be dubbed “Windows and Devices Group,” or WDG for short.
In a company-wide email, CEO Satya Nadella broke the news, saying: "This new team brings together all the engineering capability required to drive breakthrough innovations that will propel the Windows ecosystem forward. This enables us to create new categories while generating enthusiasm and demand for Desktop Computers broadly."
In addition to combining the Windows and Devices segments, Microsoft has also whittled down the number of its major engineering groups from four to three.
CEO Nadella explains: "To better align our capabilities and, ultimately, deliver better products and services our customers love at a more rapid pace, I have decided to organize our engineering effort into three groups that work together to deliver on our strategy and ambitions.”
With the shuffle and consolidation of certain business units, Microsoft’s Senior Leadership Team now totals the following 12 executives:
