Microsoft Corporation is an American multinational software company based in Washington. Microsoft develops, manufactures, licenses and supports computing products and services.
Founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allen, Microsoft is currently one of the world’s most valuable companies and the world’s largest software maker in measurements of revenues also.
Microsoft was originally established to develop and sell BASIC interpreters for the Altair 8800 microcomputer. Its success is due to their personal computer operating system MS-DOS in the mid-1980s followed by the Windows line of operating systems for desktop computers. Their 2013 revenue was $77.85 billion USD with 97,000 employees. In May of 2011, Microsoft acquired Skype Technologies for $8.5 billion USD.
Currently, Microsoft is dominating the market in both the office suite market and the PC operating system market. Microsoft also makes a variety of different software for desktops and server hardware and has been active in areas such as the video game industry (XBOX), internet search engines (BING), mobile phones (WINDOWS PHONES), and digital services market (MSN). They most recently entered the tablet market with the Microsoft Surface tablet computer.
Microsoft has several divisions as well, such as their client division, business division, and entertainment and devices division. In their Client division, Microsoft produces their flagship Windows operating system line as well as the Windows Live family of products. Server and tools produces the server version of Windows as well as Microsoft Visual Studio, Microsoft Silverlight and System Center configuration manager. Some of their other products include Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Exchange Server, Small Business Server, and Microsoft Biz Talk Server.
The company also provides IT consulting and produces a set of certification programs handled by the Server and tools division of the Microsoft. Microsoft Business Division produces the iconic Microsoft Office which includes Microsoft Word, Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Publisher, and Microsoft SharePoint. Under their entertainment division, Microsoft produces the Windows CE operating system for their smart phones. They also produce video games and video game consoles and personal computer hardware parts.
