On April 29th 2016, Agam Shah released an article on Computer World that talks about how Intel could potentially be leaving the smartphone and tablet hardware business. It seems as if billions of dollars are being wasted.
According to an Intel spokeswoman, Intel is in the works of canceling Atom chips (also known as Sofia and Broxton) that were supposedly planned to be in mobile devices. The first time this news was reported was in an article by analyst Patrick Moord head at Forbes.
This is the very beginning of what is happening at Intel Corporation. On top of this, Intel has announced plans to cut back on approximately 12,000 jobs.
The cancellation of the Sofia and Broxton chips created a problem due to the fact that Intel products were in big need of an upgrade. The Sofia and Broxton chips would be ideal however the without these chips and no major replacements, Intel users may suffer.
There are some Sofia and Broxton chips that have been pushed out into the marketplace however these chips have already been delayed.
In addition to the cancellation of the Sofia and Broxton chips, Intel is also stopping production of the Cherry Trail. Cherry Trail is the tablet chips from the Atom X5 line, which is now currently being replaced by the Celeron and Pentium chips. These Pentium and Celeron chips are called Apollo Lake.
Intel is a semiconductor manufacturing company that is headquartered in Santa Clara, California. The company was founded in July 18, 1958 in Mountain View California. There are over 100,000 employees that work for Intel.
