How Computer Networks Are Established
A computer network is what allows for different users to connect to each other over long distances. With computer networks, users have access to the World Wide Web, can share files, have instant communication, and much more, making them extremely useful. With their many uses and widespread access, businesses and universities have come to rely on them for their functions, just as individuals do as well for entertainment, communication, etc. While a multitude of people use computer networks, not many may be aware of the various components that make them up. In this blog, we will discuss the various parts of a computer network.
Basic computer network components
-
Computer - The most basic part of a computer network is the computer itself. For computers to connect to each other, they need the correct software and an operating system that supports network connection. Computers do not need to have the exact same operating software as one another to connect to each other as long as their software is compatible as computers may have different operating systems and operating system versions.
-
Network Interface Cards - Beyond the base computer, network interface cards allow for the connection of the computer to a network. Network communications may be used for both wired and wireless connections, allowing for local area network (LAN) and Internet Protocol (IP) communication. Network interface cards may be internally installed within the computer and connected to the motherboard via a Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) connection or Industry Standard Architecture (ISA). The other type of network interface card is external, connecting through USB or wireless connection.
-
Modems - Modems are the next important facet of a computer network, allowing the connected computer to both send information over a network, as well as translate and interpret the information that they receive. Information is sent over cables or fiber optic wiring, and data may come in the form of electrical or infrared signals depending on the transmission type. Modems may be either internal to the computer, or come in the form of an external device.
-
Routers and components - Routers and components are also very beneficial for establishing network connection, directing data and network signals from the modem to the computer. Routers may also be used as a security measure, only allowing specific computers to access a network with a password. Routers and components that feature wireless capabilities also allow for establishing a Wi-Fi signal for wireless connections. In some cases, routers may not be essential, but they are very commonplace for modern applications and offices.
Beyond the major components of the computer network, there are many smaller parts that play a role in establishing and controlling networks.
1.Electronic components such as switches are useful for establishing, disconnecting, or directing connections within an electrical circuit.
2.Switches are also important for packet switching to send and receive data to the destination device.
3.Firewalls are another network device, allowing for security and access rules to be established in order to protect computer networks from unrecognized sources.
