Cisco Systems, Inc. is an American based multinational corporation headquartered in San Jose, California. Cisco designs, manufactures, and sells networking equipment and devices.
The company was founded in December of 1984 by Leonard Bosack and Sandy Lerner, both who were members of Stanford University computer support staff.
The foundation of their first Cisco IOS was based off of exact replicas of Stanford’s “Blue Box” as well as a stolen copy of Stanford’s multiple-protocol router software. The name “Cisco” originated from the city name, “San Francisco”. Cisco Systems went public in 1990 and was listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange.
Although Cisco didn’t have a breakthrough by being the first company to develop and sell dedicated network nodes, it was one of the first companies to successfully sell commercial wireless routers that supported multiple network protocols. Their CPU-based architecture along with their operating system in their early devices allowed Cisco to keep up with evolving technology needs by constantly upgrading their software.
Cisco’s products and services focuses on three market segments – Small businesses, corporate businesses, and Home. Their Corporate market refers to enterprise networking and service providers. Cisco provides borderless networks, collaboration, data center & virtualization, IP Next Gen Networks.
