Celestica Inc. is an electronics manufacturing services (EMS) company headquartered in Toronto, Canada. It began as a small mainframe computer manufacturing plant for IBM Canada and eventually spun off into an independent company in 1994.
As a subsidiary, Celestica diversified into building circuit boards, memory products, and power supplies for IBM products. In 1996, Celestica transferred ownership from IBM to Onex Corporation, which took Celestica public in 1998. The company eventually grew to a global manufacturing network with over 40 locations in 11 countries worldwide with revenue in 2013 reaching approximately $5.7 billion.
Although involved in a variety of supply chain and other services, Celestica continues to specialize in manufacturing, including printed circuit boards (PCA) and other microelectronics. The company offers bare die, an integrated circuit that has not been packaged, in order to reduce materials cost, enable miniaturization, enhance signal integrity, and improve thermal management.
Celestica offers a range of assembly services including SMT, PTH with wave solder and selective solder, systems, and solar panels. Their innovative techniques include tin-lead and lead-free processes, CCGA to 2577 I/O, PBGA to 2916 I/O, CSP to 0.5mm pitch, Discretes down to 0201s, double-sided/mirrored BGA assembly, double-sided/single reflow processing, fine pitch, high pin count, press fit connectors, and much more.
Celestica has been manufacturing products for OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) for over 75 years with applications that include terminal and device servers, networking, wireless and telecommunication equipment, storage, optical equipment, aerospace and defense electronics (in-flight entertainment and guidance systems), healthcare diagnostic imaging, plus many more. Communications-related industries make up the bulk of Celestica’s customers with 42% of revenue as of 2013.
