Benchmark Electronics, established in 1979 in Clute, Texas, is a contract provider of electronics manufacturing services (EMS) of integrated electronics products for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Originally an assembly line for Intermedics (a producer of medical implants), the company specialized in low-volume manufactures and was known as Electronics, Inc. In 1988, the company was renamed Benchmark Electronics, Inc. and is currently headquartered in Angleton, Texas. With fiscal year 2013 revenues of $2.5 billion and public trading on the New York Stock Exchange, the company has experienced enormous growth. Benchmark has continually expanded through a series of strategic acquisitions including: Lockheed Martin Commercial Electronics Company in 1998, AVEX Electronics, Pemstar in 2007, and most recently the Suntron Corporation in 2013 – an electronics company with a focus on aerospace and defense.
From the specialized business of medical products, the company has vastly broadened its offerings and global reach. The company now serves markets in the aerospace/defense, computing/data storage (30% of sales), energy, industrial (29%), medical (11%), testing/instrumentation (7%), semiconductor & automation, and telecommunications (23%) industries. Benchmark offers services and products through a variety of capabilities including: assembly design, automation design & build, electronics hardware, embedded systems, radio frequency/wireless, robotics, and many others.
With manufacturing locations in China, Malaysia, Mexico, Romania, and Thailand, the company specializes in large-scale production of printed circuit boards but can also provide manufactures in lower volume. Domestic facilities are located in Alabama, Arizona, California, Minnesota, New Hampshire, North Dakota, and Texas. All of Benchmark’s BEI sites are ISO 9001 certified, most are ISO 14001, ISO 13485 certified, AS 9100, and ITAR certified, and many sites are OHSAS 18001, FDA/QSR compliant, Nadcap, ISO ISO/TS 16949, TL 9000, and ANSI ESD20: 20 certified.
Benchmark is partly responsible for developing a number of notable technologies including: the first ingestible camera for imaging inside a human body, the first drug-eluting stent, a hand-held vein-finding device, a combat exoskeleton for the US Army, a portable Braille personal digital assistant (PDA), an automated infant screening device, a thrombectomy removal system, the ScopeMeter (a DMM and oscilloscope combination), a hand-held electrolytic, a detachable coil system for cerebral aneurysms, a prescription drug vending machine, among many other advanced products. The company has received awards from prestigious industry groups including: Medical Design Excellence Awards, Industrial Design Excellence Awards, iF Design, Swift Award, and A Design Award.
