Revealed by an anonymous source speaking to BuzzFeed, Apple Inc. is working on a hardware update for its Apple TV, which hasn’t been upgraded since 2012. The update will reportedly include a boosted processor with a custom A8 (which can support ultra-high definition video of up to 4K-resolution), as well as increased memory storage beyond the current capacity of 8 GB.In addition, the company will release the upgraded Apple TV with a new App Store and software development kit, including Siri voice control and integration with HomeKit home automation devices.
The source also claims that Apple is currently in talks with a number of television networks (including ABC, CBS, Fox, among others) to provide streaming services for network programming. The company intends to offer a new service in the Fall with about 25 channels, available by subscription on the Apple TV. The new Apple TV is expected to be announced at this year’s World Wide Developers Conference taking place this summer around June.
Analysts at J.P. Morgan believe that a new Apple TV equipped with a greater processor and an app store could give the company a possible entrance into the $35 billion USD gaming software market, competing with the likes of Sony’s PlayStation and Microsoft’s Xbox consoles. These new developments mark the newfound interest that the company is taking in the potential of the Apple TV, which has long been ignored in favor of smartphone, smartwatch, and personal computer technology.
With the last major upgrade approximately three years ago, the company has recently announced a $30 discount for the current version of the Apple TV – from $99 per unit to $69 per unit. The new focus on the Apple TV is a result of the high sales volume that the product has experienced, reaching over $1 billion USD in 2013.
