In March of 2015, Apple Inc. has reportedly acquired FoundationDB, a software company specializing in NoSQL and SQL database access. Although neither company responded to requests for comments, FoundationDB announced on its forum that they will no longer be offering downloads and have decided “to evolve our company mission.” The reason for the acquisition is not known but commenters surmise that the purchase will be used to “bolster Apple’s server-side technologies for the App Store, iTunes Connect or iTunes in the Cloud” (TechCrunch), “finding a future FileMaker application or tool” (Patently Apple), or other data-heavy applications such as “online dating, gaming, analytics, and online marketplaces” (ZDNet).
The value of the purchase has not been released, but Apple retains a cash reservoir of $178 billion USD for acquisition of start-ups and other endeavors. The company has acquired 17 companies in 2014 alone, including popular Sound Cards manufacturer Beats Electronics LLC.
According to TechCrunch, FoundationDB offers high speeds and strong scalability, handling ACID-compliant transactions and transferring 14.4 million random writes per second with ease. This could prove useful for Apple with its increasing software data requirements resulting from its ventures into cloud computing, Consumer phone messaging, and other high-data applications.
FoundationDB is based in Vienna, Virginia with a workforce of approximately 40 strong. The company was cofounded by Michael Arrington, one of the founders of technology blog TechCrunch – the outlet which first broke the news about the acquisition. The small company has been growing consistently since 2009, raising almost $23 million in two rounds of venture capital funding from SV Angel, Sutter Hill and CrunchFund.
